Challenge one: Magic Stones
We were approached by Merrell publishers to design a photo book of the Czech photographer Jan Pohribnéy who had spent the last 17 years documenting megaliths throughout Europe. The book needed an identity and system to display the photographs. There was a loose chapter structure but no order for the photographs. The solution
We created a grid system to accommodate the photographs and give a sense of order, contrast and pace. We picked a typeface that represented the subjected matter and created a mood for the book. We created the order in which the photographs were to be displayed and added rich black backgrounds to bring the colour out in photographs where needed.Challenge two: Superstructures in Space
After the successful and smooth running of the design of Magic Stones we were approached to design a book on Superstructures in space. The book needed to hold a lot of information, imagery and projects. The solution
We created a flexible 12 column grid system to accommodate text and varying size of imagery. We created a ‘Key facts’ panel and a method of distinguishing each project contained within the book.
